Chapter Fourteen
As Ben loped across the lawn behind Hattie, he was reminded of the night sheâd sneaked out of Taviston Hall to meet a stable boy when she was what...all of nineteen? This wasnât the first time sheâd done something risky. He was only grateful he was included in the adventure this time. Wisely, she wore a dark wrapper that blended with the night. Her strides were hampered by her skirts though, so he shortened his. She veered left and they plunged into a sentinel of oak trees guarding the perimeter of the manorâs lawn. She slowed to a fast-paced walk, picking her way through the woods. Within a few minutes, they emerged into a clearing where a sturdy stone cottage gleamed in the moonlight.
Dropping his hand, Hattie approached the front of the structure, peered in a window, then lifted the latch on the door and pushed inside. Ben followed, ducking his head so as not to whack it on the low portal.
âWhat is this place?â
She spun around and spread her hands wide. âA gamekeeperâs cottage. We are currently without one, so there is no worry of anyone coming this way. Still, we probably shouldnât light a candle or lamp.â
âThere is enough moonlight, plus our eyes will adjust.â The dwelling was just the one room with a fireplace and two worn chairs against the far wall, a sturdy looking wooden bed to the left, and a small table with two chairs to the right. The timbered ceiling rose to a point in the center above them. Three rugs covered the oak floor.
It wasnât luxury accommodation, but Hattie had suggested it, so the cottage must be good enough.
âHattie, what are you doing?â
Within the space of thirty seconds, sheâd toed off her shoes, tossed her wrapper over one of the cushioned chairs, and peeled off her nightdress. She stood gloriously naked before him, but at his bewildered tone, clutched the white lawn gown to her chest.
His mouth needed to learn when to stay closed.
âOh! Oh... Have you never...? Are you a...? Ben, is this your first time?â Her face twisted in a multitude of confusion.
Hands on hips, coat pushed aside, he stared at herâa goddess of a womanâand then laughed. Two strides had him halfway across the tiny room, his boots clicking on the hardwood floor. âNo, I am not a virgin, my lady.â Two more and he was within touching distance, though he checked himself. âIs there a time constraint I am unaware of?â
She tipped her head up. âNo, we have most of the night.â Her breath hitched on the last word, and his blood was off to the races.
âWhy the haste then?â He dropped his gaze to her toes, then leisurely took her in. Strong, shapely legs, a pale patch of rounded belly peeking out from behind the clutched nightdress, lovely shoulders, hot, simmering grey eyes. He only lamented that he couldnât see her breasts. âPart of the pleasure is in the unveiling.â
âYou surprise me.â
He smiled. âI hope to do so many times over.
